After-hours answering service

Every evening call answered on your own number, qualified against your script, and booked into your calendar before the caller has time to ring the next company on the list.

Service businesses work during the day. Their customers shop in the evening, because that is when they are at home with the problem in front of them. The enquiry that arrives at 8pm sits in an inbox until 9am, and by then the customer has usually contacted two or three other firms.

An after-hours answering service closes that gap. RankThread builds one on an AI voice agent that runs on your existing number, follows the call script you approve, and writes the booking straight into the calendar and CRM you already use.

BE CLEAR ABOUT WHAT THIS IS

This is not a room of people taking messages. It is an AI voice agent that holds a real conversation, answers the questions you tell it to answer, and books appointments. It picks up on the first ring, at 3am, on a bank holiday, on every line at once. It will not improvise beyond its script, and it will not handle a distressed or highly unusual call the way a trained human will. Where that matters, we say so and route those calls to a person.

What happens on an evening call

  • The agent answers on your number, in your business name, with the greeting you signed off.
  • It asks your qualifying questions, in your order, and captures the answers as structured fields.
  • If the job fits, it offers real slots from your live calendar and books one.
  • If it does not fit, or the caller asks something outside the script, it takes the details and flags the call for the morning.
  • Emergencies, defined by you, are escalated immediately by call or text to whoever is on.
  • Every call is recorded, transcribed and scored, so you can read exactly what was said.

The caller does not join a queue and does not leave a voicemail. That is the whole point. Speed of response is the one variable in lead handling with genuinely strong evidence behind it, and it is the one an after-hours gap destroys.

Before you buy anything, measure your own evening

We would rather say this before taking money for it: most businesses do not need a full answering service, and the ones that do should be able to prove it from their own data first.

Export the last 90 days of enquiries from your form, inbox and call log. Bucket them by hour and by day. Work out what share arrived outside your working hours, and what share of those ever converted. If out-of-hours enquiries convert at roughly the same rate as daytime ones, you do not have a problem worth £2,000. If they convert at half the rate, the gap is response time, and it is worth fixing.

Our after-hours playbook walks through that measurement and gives you the auto-reply and missed-call scripts to run first, free. Start there. If the cheap fixes close the gap, keep your money.

Which option fits

OptionBest whenTrade-off
Out-of-hours auto-replyAlways. Do this tonight, before anything elseSets expectations but books nothing
Missed-call text-backPhone-led businesses and most tradesStill needs someone to reply in the morning
Human answering serviceDistressed callers, genuine emergency trades, complex triagePriced per call or per minute, and messages still need actioning

WHEN WE WILL TELL YOU NO

If your out-of-hours volume is a handful of calls a week, an auto-reply and a deliberate 8am callback sweep will capture most of the value for nothing. We will say that on the call rather than sell you a build you cannot justify.

What you get

  • A voice agent live on a production number in seven days, mapped to your actual call flow.
  • Inbound, outbound or support flows, built to the script you approve.
  • Calendar and CRM integration out of the box, with no middleware to license.
  • Call recordings, transcripts and QA dashboards. The agent is not a black box.
  • The configuration, the scripts and the recordings are yours. You are not renting access to your own call data.

Builds start at £1,997 as a one-time setup. Full package detail and what sits inside each tier is on the voice agents page.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a human answering service?

No. It is an AI voice agent. It holds a natural conversation and books appointments, but it works to an approved script rather than improvising. If your calls need human judgement, we will tell you, and we can route those calls to a person instead.

Does it use my existing phone number?

Yes. The agent runs on your number. Callers do not see a different line and you do not reprint anything.

What happens if it cannot answer a question?

It says so, takes the caller details, and flags the call for follow-up. It is built to stop rather than guess. Anything you define as an emergency is escalated straight away.

Can it book into my calendar?

Yes. It reads live availability and writes the appointment into the calendar and CRM you already run, so there is no separate system to check in the morning.

How long does it take to go live?

Seven days to a live production number, fourteen to full handover. The build runs in five phases and you approve the script before anything answers a real call.

What does it cost?

Builds start at £1,997 as a one-time setup, with larger operations and multi-flow builds priced above that. There is no per-minute charge from us for the agent itself. Telephony and model usage are billed at cost on your own accounts, which is part of what owning it means.

Do I own it?

Yes. The scripts, the configuration and the call data are yours. If you stop working with us, the agent keeps running.

FIG. 01 · SOURCES

We do not quote an industry percentage for out-of-hours enquiry share. The vendor reports behind the widely repeated figures are not independently reproducible and the number varies enormously by trade, so we ask you to measure your own instead.
