Instagram Engagement Rate & Account Health Calculator

Enter recent post metrics oldest to newest. Compare average with median, follower rate with reach rate, and surface outliers before judging content or follower quality.

Use the tool

Do not let one viral post define the account

Average engagement can be distorted by one unusually strong post. This calculator shows both average and median, checks whether the largest result is more than twice the median, and compares the older and newer halves of the sample.

It also separates follower engagement from reach engagement. The follower calculation uses likes and comments. Reach engagement includes likes, comments, saves and shares when reach is available. No external good/bad benchmark is invented.

How the method works

  1. Enter the current follower count and eight to thirty comparable recent posts, oldest first.
  2. Add likes and comments for follower engagement. Add saves, shares and reach for a deeper reach-based view.
  3. The calculator produces average and median rates, sample trend, consistency and the save/share portion of recorded interactions.
  4. An outlier warning appears when the top follower-engagement result is more than twice the median.
  5. Export the diagnostic as Markdown and the post rows as CSV.

Worked example

Imagine eight posts where seven cluster around one percent follower engagement and one reaches four percent. The average rises sharply, but the median remains closer to the repeatable account pattern. That gap is a reason to inspect the exceptional topic, format and source of reach rather than call the whole account healthy or unhealthy.

What this result cannot tell you

A recent sample cannot prove follower quality, sales impact or statistical significance. Reach definitions and metric availability can change inside Instagram. Compare like-for-like post types and use account history, business goals and conversion evidence before acting.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Instagram engagement rate formula?

Follower engagement per post is (likes plus comments) divided by followers, multiplied by 100. Reach engagement uses likes, comments, saves and shares divided by reach.

Should I use average or median engagement?

Use both. Average shows total sample performance but moves with outliers. Median is often a better view of the typical recent post.

How many posts should I include?

Fewer than eight is a low-confidence sample. Eight to fourteen is directional. Fifteen or more gives stronger directional evidence, but not statistical certainty.

What is a good Instagram engagement rate?

There is no universal rate that accounts for audience size, niche, post format, reach source and business goal. Compare your own history, median, reach rate and conversion outcomes.

Do saves and shares count?

They enter reach engagement and the interaction-mix result. The follower-rate formula stays limited to likes and comments so its method remains clear.

Can this detect ghost followers?

No. It can reveal reach, interaction, trend and outlier patterns that deserve investigation. It cannot identify individual fake or inactive followers.
